She’s Just a Vase

“She’s just a vase” is a phrase from Taiwanese culture commonly used to describe a woman whose only worth is her physical beauty and nothing else, implying that she lacks any other skills or qualities.

Taking inspiration from this phrase in a sarcastic way, I aim to challenge this objectification of women by destroying fabrics related to female stereotypes and using them to make vases that embody quirky forms and diverse textures.

This vase, crafted from deliberately distressed gown fabrics re-patched and re-coiled with wool yarns and decorative cords, deconstructs female stereotypes and reclaims a woman's identity through domestic craft, serving as an empowering symbol of a woman's ownership of her own identity and her refusal to accept others' definitions of her.

Each knot is dedicated to a woman's endeavor to create something she values in her life. Each loop represents an act of support a woman receives. Formed organically together, this work celebrates the interconnectedness and mutual empowerment among women.
